Job Description
A fast-growing East African hospitality company, represented through Emerge Egress Consulting, is seeking a meticulous, self-driven, and highly principled General Accountant to join their Nairobi-based finance team. This is a full-time, on-site role offering a competitive gross salary of KES 60,000 per month.
In this role, you will be the backbone of the company's day-to-day financial operations — ensuring accurate bookkeeping, timely statutory compliance, seamless payroll processing, and meaningful financial reporting that empowers management decision-making. If you thrive in a structured environment, take pride in precision, and understand the unique financial dynamics of the hospitality sector, this opportunity is built for you.
- Post and process all daily journal entries accurately, keeping the general ledger current and audit-ready at all times.
- Prepare and file all statutory returns on time via the KRA iTax portal, including VAT, PAYE, Withholding Tax, SHIF, NSSF, and the Affordable Housing Levy.
- Conduct weekly and monthly reconciliations of bank statements, supplier accounts, and customer accounts, promptly resolving any discrepancies identified.
- Manage end-to-end accounts payable and receivable — process invoices, maintain client aging reports, follow up on outstanding debts, and schedule supplier payments efficiently.
- Prepare the monthly payroll, ensuring accurate computation of salaries, allowances, statutory deductions, and net pay disbursements.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow forecasts for management review.
- Organize and maintain financial documentation to facilitate smooth internal and external annual audit processes.
- Support the finance function with any additional duties as assigned by management.
- Demonstrate at least 4 years of hands-on accounting experience, with a strong preference for candidates who have worked within the hospitality or service industry.
- Apply practical knowledge of Kenyan tax legislation, including iTax filing procedures for VAT, PAYE, WHT, NSSF, SHIF, and the Affordable Housing Levy.
- Use accounting software confidently for day-to-day bookkeeping, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Produce accurate financial reports using intermediate-to-advanced MS Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and financial modelling tools.
- Maintain meticulous records with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in every task undertaken.
- Work independently under minimal supervision while consistently meeting tight monthly and statutory deadlines.
- Demonstrate a proven track record of professional integrity and ethical financial conduct.
This role offers a gross monthly salary of KES 60,000. The position is full-time and based in Nairobi. Statutory benefits including NSSF, SHIF, and PAYE compliance are standard components of the remuneration package.
This role is ideal for a CPA Part 2 or above professional (CPA-K or ACCA finalist preferred) who holds a degree in Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, and who has built solid, practical accounting experience — ideally within hospitality, tourism, food and beverage, or a similarly fast-paced service environment. You should be someone who can own a finance function with confidence, communicate clearly with management, and operate with unwavering integrity.
Please do not apply if you have fewer than 4 years of accounting experience, have no working knowledge of KRA iTax, or are unable to commit to a full-time, on-site role in Nairobi.
Interested and qualified candidates should submit their updated CV and a brief cover letter highlighting their relevant accounting experience and CPA certification level. Apply through the Emerge Egress Consulting official recruitment channel. Note: Never pay any fee — for certificates, notarisation, or assessments — as part of any legitimate recruitment process. The application deadline is 19th June 2026.

Salary Context
Fixed salary at market floor for General Accountant in Nairobi
KES 60,000 gross per month is at the lower end of the General Accountant salary range in Nairobi; experienced accountants with 4+ years typically earn between KES 65,000–85,000 depending on sector and company size. Hospitality roles often command slightly lower salaries than banking/corporate finance, but this role lacks transparency around performance bonuses or incentives.

Likely Interview Questions
- 1
Walk us through your experience with Kenyan tax compliance — specifically, can you describe a time when you identified a VAT or PAYE filing issue and how you resolved it?
- 2
Tell us about your most complex bank reconciliation or month-end close process — what challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
- 3
Have you worked in the hospitality or F&B sector before? If so, how does accounting in that environment differ from other industries?
- 4
Describe a time when you had to process payroll under a tight deadline while managing multiple other month-end duties. How did you stay organised?
- 5
What accounting software have you used, and how comfortable are you learning a new system if our company uses something unfamiliar to you?
Application Tips
Highlight specific experience with iTax filings and Kenyan statutory compliance — mention exact tax types (VAT, PAYE, WHT, NSSF) you've managed and any discrepancies you've resolved.
Emphasise hospitality, F&B, or service industry experience prominently, even if brief — this is a stated preference and will set you apart from generic accounting candidates.
Provide concrete examples of your Excel expertise: mention pivot tables, financial models, or forecasts you've built, and quantify the impact (e.g., 'automated monthly reconciliation process, saving 3 hours per month').

Honest Assessment
Green Flags
- Clear, detailed job description with specific responsibilities and tools (iTax, accounting software, Excel), indicating a well-thought-out role and reasonable expectations.
- Emphasis on statutory compliance and audit readiness shows the company values integrity and governance — a sign of a professionally-run organisation.
- Full-time, on-site role in Nairobi with explicit mention of statutory benefits (NSSF, SHIF, PAYE compliance) demonstrates legitimate employment terms.
- Focus on the 'backbone' of financial operations suggests meaningful impact and autonomy in day-to-day decision-making, rather than a purely clerical role.
Watch Out
- Salary listed as exactly 'KES 60,000–60,000/mo' with no range, suggesting no negotiation flexibility; this is unusually rigid for a 4+ year experience role and warrants clarification during interview.
- Job description mentions 'additional duties as assigned by management' with no scope definition — risk of scope creep beyond core accounting responsibilities.
- Employer is represented through a consulting firm (Emerge Egress Consulting) rather than the hospitality company directly, which may create ambiguity about reporting structure, company culture fit, and long-term stability.
A Day in the Life
Your week balances routine and deadline-driven tasks: Mondays and Tuesdays focus on weekly bank and supplier reconciliations, posting daily journal entries, and flagging any discrepancies to management. Mid-week, you're preparing invoices for accounts payable, chasing outstanding customer payments, and updating aging reports. By Thursday, payroll computation is underway—you're calculating salaries, allowances, and statutory deductions in accounting software, cross-checking against Excel models. Fridays involve finalising the payroll run, reviewing month-end reconciliations, and preparing preliminary financial data (balance sheet, P&L draft) for management review. Throughout the month, you're managing iTax submissions for VAT and PAYE on schedule, organising audit-ready documentation, and responding to finance queries from operations teams across the hospitality business.
