Job Description

Role Overview

Boma Projects (The BOMA Project) is a U.S. nonprofit and Kenyan NGO dedicated to alleviating extreme poverty and building resilience among women and youth in the drylands of Africa. Through its flagship Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) Graduation Model, BOMA replaces dependency on aid with sustainable, market-linked income opportunities. This role is based in Wajir County and sits at the heart of that mission.

As a Business Coach, you will deliver intensive, field-based enterprise development support to young women and men engaged in livestock and agri-related value chains. You will combine the REAP Graduation Model with a Market Systems Development (MSD) approach to guide participants from selection through to running viable, scalable, and climate-resilient businesses. This is a highly practical, community-facing role requiring deep knowledge of agribusiness, financial inclusion, and youth coaching in arid and semi-arid land (ASAL) contexts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead participant identification, onboarding, and selection using defined programme criteria to ensure the right beneficiaries are reached.
  • Collaborate with curriculum staff to contextualise and adapt training content to local market realities and participant needs.
  • Deliver structured business training and coaching using the REAP model, embedding gender-responsive and climate-smart approaches throughout.
  • Conduct enterprise assessments and design tailored coaching plans for individual entrepreneurs, producer groups, and micro and small enterprises (MSMEs).
  • Support participants to identify, establish, and grow viable livestock and agri-enterprises, including the adoption of climate-smart production practices.
  • Perform value chain and market systems analyses to identify constraints, bottlenecks, and market opportunities relevant to participants.
  • Facilitate linkages between participants and off-takers, processors, traders, aggregators, input suppliers, financial institutions, and other market ecosystem actors.
  • Manage grant disbursement processes, track utilisation, and ensure accountability in line with programme guidelines.
  • Facilitate and strengthen group savings and lending (VSLA) structures and link participants to formal financial services.
  • Work closely with consortium partners and technical specialists to ensure participants access sector-specific support and expertise.
  • Monitor participant progress, collect data, and prepare timely field reports to inform programme learning and adaptation.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Demonstrate at least 3–5 years of hands-on experience in enterprise development, agribusiness coaching, or livelihoods programming, preferably in ASAL counties.
  • Apply proven knowledge of livestock and agri-value chains, including input supply, production, aggregation, processing, and market access dynamics in dryland Kenya.
  • Facilitate adult learning and business training using participatory methodologies adapted to low-literacy and pastoralist communities.
  • Conduct market systems analyses and translate findings into actionable business development strategies for smallholder producers and entrepreneurs.
  • Engage private sector actors, financial institutions, and market intermediaries to broker linkages that benefit programme participants.
  • Use financial inclusion tools — including VSLA facilitation, mobile money platforms, and savings mobilisation — to improve participant access to capital.
  • Demonstrate strong gender and youth sensitivity in programme delivery, ensuring equitable participation and outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively in Somali or a language spoken in Wajir County (strongly preferred); proficiency in Swahili and English is required.
  • Hold a minimum of a Bachelor's degree or HND in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Development Studies, Economics, or a related field.
Salary & Benefits

The BOMA Project offers competitive NGO-sector compensation commensurate with experience. Based on the seniority and field intensity of this role, the estimated monthly gross salary ranges from KES 100,000 to KES 180,000. Specific benefits and allowances will be confirmed during the recruitment process.

Who Should Apply

Ideal candidate: A motivated, field-oriented development professional with a strong background in livestock or agribusiness value chains, genuine passion for youth and women's economic empowerment, and prior experience working in Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, or similar ASAL counties. You are comfortable spending the majority of your time in the field, can navigate rural community dynamics with cultural sensitivity, and have a track record of coaching entrepreneurs to measurable business outcomes.

Do not apply if: You have no direct field experience in ASAL contexts, are unwilling to be based full-time in Wajir, lack hands-on enterprise coaching or agribusiness backgrounds, or have experience limited to desk-based programme coordination.

How to Apply
  • Visit the official BOMA Project careers page or the platform where this role is listed.
  • Prepare an updated CV and a cover letter clearly demonstrating your experience in enterprise coaching, agribusiness, and ASAL-based programming.
  • Submit your application before the deadline of 20th June 2026.
  • Note: Never pay any fee, certificate cost, or assessment charge as part of any recruitment process. BOMA Projects does not charge applicants at any stage.
