Job Description
Andela is a talent-connecting platform that bridges top software engineering talent across Africa with leading technology companies around the world. As part of their continued investment in engineering excellence, Andela is looking to bring on board a skilled DevOps Engineer based in Nairobi to strengthen and support their distributed engineering platform.
In this role, you will sit at the heart of Andela's infrastructure operations, working to ensure systems are reliable, secure, and scalable. You will collaborate closely with multiple engineering teams, championing DevOps culture while managing mission-critical cloud environments that power a global workforce platform.

- Oversee and manage cloud infrastructure hosted on AWS, leveraging tools such as Terraform and Kubernetes to ensure efficient provisioning and orchestration
- Proactively monitor system reliability, track performance metrics, and lead incident response efforts to minimise downtime
- Embed and enforce security best practices across all areas of the infrastructure landscape
- Guide and mentor fellow engineers, helping to embed a strong DevOps culture and modern operational practices across the organisation
- A minimum of four years of hands-on experience in a DevOps or infrastructure engineering capacity
- In-depth, practical knowledge of AWS services including ECS, EKS, RDS, and S3

- Strong command of Linux operating systems alongside solid scripting capabilities in Bash and/or Python
- Familiarity with industry-standard monitoring and observability tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, and Grafana
This position is best suited for a seasoned infrastructure professional who thrives in dynamic, distributed team environments and has a genuine passion for building robust, scalable systems. The ideal candidate is someone who not only possesses deep technical expertise across cloud platforms and automation tooling, but also takes pride in uplifting those around them through mentorship and knowledge sharing. If you are a problem-solver who approaches incidents with composure, champions security-first thinking, and is excited by the opportunity to shape engineering culture at a globally recognised African tech company, this role is worth your attention.
Interested candidates should submit their application through Andela's official recruitment channels. Significantly above market rate for a DevOps Engineer in Nairobi
Mid-to-senior DevOps Engineers in Nairobi typically earn between KES 120,000 and KES 220,000 per month, making this range of KES 200,000–320,000 notably competitive, likely reflecting Andela's global client base and the premium they place on strong infrastructure talent. Pay in this field is heavily influenced by cloud certifications, depth of AWS expertise, and prior experience in distributed or international-facing engineering environments.

Application Tips
Quantify your infrastructure impact on your CV — for example, cite reductions in deployment time, uptime improvements, or the scale of infrastructure you managed (number of services, cloud spend, team size supported).
Highlight specific AWS certifications or project experience with EKS and ECS prominently, as these are called out explicitly and signal readiness to contribute from day one.
Demonstrate mentorship or cross-functional collaboration experience, since Andela's distributed model means your ability to align engineering teams on DevOps culture is as valued as your technical skills.

Honest Assessment
Green Flags
- Salary range of KES 200,000–320,000/month is well above the Nairobi market average for this seniority level, signalling that Andela values this role and compensates accordingly.
- Andela is a reputable, internationally recognised employer with a strong track record in Africa's tech space, lending strong credibility and career prestige to the role.
- The mentorship responsibility signals a senior, influential position rather than a purely execution-focused role, offering real leadership development.
- The tech stack — AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes, Datadog, Prometheus — is modern, in-demand globally, and will keep your skills sharp and highly marketable.
Watch Out
- The job description does not specify whether the role is fully remote, hybrid, or on-site in Nairobi, which is an important consideration given Andela's historically remote-first model — candidates should clarify this early.
- The responsibilities are broad — spanning CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, incident response, security, and mentorship — which could indicate a lean team where one engineer is expected to cover a very wide surface area.
A Day in the Life
A typical week starts with a standup or async check-in with distributed engineering teams to triage infrastructure requests and review overnight monitoring alerts in Datadog or Grafana. Midweek, you might be deep in Terraform code reviewing a pull request to expand EKS cluster capacity or debugging a flaky CI/CD pipeline in collaboration with a product engineering squad. By Friday, you could be facilitating a post-mortem on a recent incident, updating runbooks, or running a short knowledge-sharing session with junior engineers on Kubernetes best practices — all while keeping a close eye on AWS cost dashboards and security compliance checks.
